Description

Congreve Clock

William Congreve, the son of a British general and more famous for his invention of the first rocket in 1795, patented a new principle for measuring time with a roller-ball escapement in 1808. His original movement was driven by a cannonball, later models were driven by springs. His clock was anything but precise, but the mechanism offers the observer a fascinating and mesmerizing spectacle. In the table clock “Congreve Clock” from Sinclair Harding, the movement is located on the top of the clock.

The running mechanism is made of brass and is available with a white or black ceramic ball. The ball winds its way along the rail and triggers the mechanism every 15 seconds, which causes the ball to run back gently.

The table clock “Congreve Clock” is driven by a spring through a handmade chain, which drives the movement through a fusee. This ensures that the movement experiences a constant torque. The movement has a power reserve of eight days and is wound from the front by lifting the bezel with the winding key to expose the winding arbor. At the other end of the movement, a flywheel dampens the shock loads on the individual hands. This prevents vibration of the bucket train.

The hours are displayed using a mother-of-pearl disc. The dial ring is produced by machining, engraving, bead blasting, manual polishing and subsequent coating with platinum or gold. After coating, the numerals are carefully filled with wax before being assembled.

The Congreve clock from Sinclair Harding stands on a marble base and is encased in a beveled glass shade that opens to the front for winding.
